Small Brokerages Dominate: The Rise of the Underdogs in 2023

• Small brokerages, those with fewer than 25 agents, house 80% of real estate agents.
• The average number of agents per brokerage is seven.
• The year 2023 was a banner year for these typically under the radar firms.
• Brad Inman, a well-known writer in the real estate space, has pulled together this data.

Small Brokerages Show Might in 2023

The Little Engines That Could…Sell Houses

Agents Galore: Who’s Got the Power?

I know what you’re thinking – “So many realtors, so few agents!” But if you crunch the numbers, it seems that the “seven dwarfs” of each brokerage might be banding together to outperform their “Snow White” competitors.

Ha! Bet you didn’t see that fairytale analogy coming. But that’s right folks, it’s not all about the big brokerages any more. Our friend Brad Inman has turned his all-seeing eye on these pint-sized powerhouses and, lo and behold, they’re stirring up quite the ruckus!

In the fairy tale that is modern real estate, the 80 percent of agents nesting in the bosom of small brokerages are turning into the Cinderellas of the ball. And, they clocked in a rather glorious performance in 2023, trumping larger brokerages (likely reeling from a tough year) and proving that small can indeed be mighty!

So, if you’re in the market, don’t underestimate the little guys. It’s not always about the quantity of your agents, but the quality and determination. And when they roll up their sleeves and get to work, you bet they punch above their weight. So, brokers, it’s time to think less “corporate giant” and more “small and spry!” Because it’s clear, the David’s of the real estate world are here to stay, and you bet, they’re packing a particularly powerful punch.
